Today's Lesson
Main Activity
Today we are going to see how using a grid and co-ordinates make maps much easier to use. Co-ordinates tell us which square to look in on a map - we give the letter from along the bottom first, followed by the number for how far to go up the side. Ask your student to use the Fruit & Vegetables Worksheet to practice - the first one has been done for them.
Co-ordinates on a map can tell us where to find things. Have a look at the Treasure Island Co-ordinates sheet together and ask your student to complete the tasks. It asks them to give the co-ordinates of four features, then add three symbols of their own in the correct grid squares.
Now let’s go back to our own maps from the last lesson. There is no need to write it down, but let’s see if we can answer questions such as, "In what square is the cave?" We can also practise our other map skills, for example by asking, "What feature is 2km north of the Jetty?"
Here's the tricky bit - tell your student they need to direct you from the jetty or harbour to the treasure. Remind them to go step by step, and to try to use a mixture of compass points and co-ordinates. They could also try to use distances, although we will cover this in detail in a later lesson. Have they directed you to the correct grid square? If not, try again!
Challenge Activity
Ask your student to see if they can write five more questions for their adult to solve. They could be questions such as, “How far is it from…?” or “What direction is it to…?” They need to make sure they know the answer so they can tell if the adult gets it right!
