Main Activity
Look at the After an Earthquake images with your student, which show scenes after a major earthquake. Can your student think of and list 10 ways that this earthquake will have affected people's lives?
It is estimated that there are around 500,000 earthquakes each year worldwide, but humans can only feel about 100,000 of them.
Now let's look at how and why earthquakes occur and at the devastation they can cause.
Read pages 24-25 of the Volcanoes and Earthquakes Study Book.
Use what you have learnt to complete pages 24-25 of the Volcanoes and Earthquakes Activity Book.
Next, watch the Earthquakes video together. Using what they have watched, see if your student can match up the descriptions on The Richter Scale sheet to the correct number on the scale.
