Evaporation & Condensation

Objectives

To understand the importance of evaporation and condensation in the water cycle

Resources

Saucepan | Water | Glass bowl | Heat source | Metal tray | Cotton material (e.g. tea towel) | Plant | Plastic bag | Assignment 9

Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Explain to your child that once water vapour cools, it forms droplets of water and creates the clouds in the atmosphere.

This process can be demonstrated* by heating a saucepan of water on the top of a cooker. There will be some visible steam above the boiling water. Explain to your child that this is the condensed gas forming the droplets of water. It can be seen even more clearly if you hold a glass bowl or cold metal tray above the water, to allow the droplets to collect on the base of the bowl/tray.

*Note: An adult should demonstrate this and take great care as steam is as hot as boiling water!

Next, look together at the Water Cycle Diagram resource. Make sure that your child understands the meaning of each term through discussion and explain the importance of the water cycle to life on the planet.

Precipitation means water falling from the clouds in any form, either rain, hail or snow.

Transpiration is the process of evaporation from plants. We can see this by taking a plant and covering one half with a plastic bag and leaving the other half out. What happens to the plastic bag?
