Living Things, Their Habitats & Environment
Objectives
To be able to recognize specific features necessary for adaptation to different habitats.
To begin to understand that habitats contain many food chains.
Resources

Today's Lesson
Main Activity
Look at the Woodland Habitat poster together with your child.
π READ - Woodland Habitat poster
Animals must live in a habitat where they can find food. In this woodland habitat, some eat plants, some eat other animals, and some eat plants and animals.
- Deer eat plants.
- Foxes, owls, toads, and moles eat other animals.
- Mice, squirrels, badgers, and hedgehogs eat plants and other animals.
Talk about what is necessary for an animal to choose a habitat (the natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism). The area must have a source of food and water. Not all animals need to drink water, as they can obtain this from their food, e.g. plants or insects. Shelter is also necessary, particularly if the animal is prey to other animals, or if the habitat is in a very hot or cold environment.
