Ask your child what they already know about electricity. Ask them to write down their ideas in a word web with the word electricity written in the centre.

Watch the videos Introduction to Electricityand Electrical Conductors and Insulators and add any further information. Add as many circles as you need.

Look at the Household Devices and Appliances resource and check to see which you have any of those in your home. Explain that today you are going to look for appliances and items in your home that use electricity.

Have a look around and help your child identify some appliances or items. On a new sheet of paper, ask your child to create a list with two columns: the heading of one column should be ‘Mains Electricity’; the heading of the other column Battery Electricity. Then ask your child to look around the house and to write down as many different appliances as they can see which use electricity, writing them in the appropriate column/s. Once they have written as many appliances as they can find, encourage them to try to think of others that they could add to the lists. They should keep the lists open throughout the day to add to as they find or think of other appliances. Use the following questions for discussion:

  • How many times during the day do we use electricity?
  • Do we use more mains or battery powered electricity?
