Main Activity

5b.pngTake some chocolate and time how long it takes for the chocolate to change its state, when held tightly in your child’s hand. Note down how long before it starts changing.

Ask your child to tell you about the change after 2 minutes, then ask them to hold the chocolate for 10 minutes longer and to talk about the changes again.

Then take some other materials such as butter, a biscuit, cheese, ice cube, etc. Ask your child to hold them to see if they change more quickly or more slowly than the chocolate, or if they don’t change at all.

Create a table for your child to fill in with three columns: the name of the material, its state after 2 minutes and its state after 10 minutes.

MaterialState after 2 minutesState after 10 minutes

Once they have filled in the table, discuss with them whether the surrounding temperature might also play a part in the experiment.

Would they expect the same results if they were outside on a cold winter’s day, as they would expect on a hot summer’s day?
