Today's Lesson
Main Activity
The next time your child is in the bath, give them a coin to drop into the water. Ask them to listen for the sound of the coin hitting the bottom whilst their head is out of the water, and then to repeat this and to listen whilst their head is under the water, in order to test whether sound travels through water or not. Discuss what they have found out. (Answers may include: Sound travels faster in water compared with air because water particles are packed in more densely.)
If possible, to reinforce this concept, take your child to a swimming pool and encourage them to listen to all the sounds that can be heard underwater.
Back at home, access the internet together and listen to whales’ songs in the sea. Why does their song need to travel so far?
Ask your child to record and discuss the results of all these experiences from this week.
