Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Watch the video below.

Point out to your child how some of the instruments are played from the top and some from the side.

Access the internet and listen to each of the different instruments shown in the pictures; be aware of the difference in the pitches. The didgeridoo from Australia usually only plays one note while the number of notes a panpipe can play matches the number of different pipes it has.ย However, the shakuhachi, the dizi and the recorder can all cover more than two octaves (an octave is made up of twelve notes), depending upon where the player puts their fingers.

Explain to your child that many instruments that work with someone blowing into them are called wind instruments. Sometimes whole bands are made up of wind instruments. Ask your child to investigate brass bands on the Internet to see examples of some different wind instruments.

Next, ask your child to present their learning about sound, volume and pitch in a presentation form of their choice, for example, a poster, leaflet, fact file or spider diagram. Encourage them to share their work with another family member or friend.

Assignment

Please ask your child to complete Assignment 4.
