Shaping Materials with Heat

Objectives

  • To understand and investigate the effect of heat on a range of materials.
  • To compare hard and soft materials.

Resources

Lined paper | 2 eggs | Pan of boiling water | Butter | Other items/food to be heated

Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Play 'Melt Down' by gently melting or heating butter, chocolate or anything else you have in the kitchen and record what you see and what happens to them e.g. ice when heated melts, bread when heated turns into toast and then burns.

Think about your salt dough that you made in lesson one. How did heating cause the properties in the dough to change? What happened to the dough? How did it feel before and after?

Take an egg and crack it into a bowl. Explain this is a raw egg and describe its properties (what it looks like e.g. runny, liquid, wet, slimy etc.) Place the second egg in a pan of boiling water (adult help required) and cook it for 8-10 minutes. Once it is cooled, try to crack the egg as before. Peel the egg and note the properties of the egg now (e.g. solid, rubbery, hard etc). How has the heat changed the egg? Try heating other materials or items and record your findings e.g. butter, cheese, chocolate, ice cubes.

Make a table to record your findings:

Material or ItemWhat happens when it is heated?
