Today's Lesson

Main Activity

14a.pngMake another batch of salt dough using the recipe from last step with your child.

Explain to your child that during this lesson they will be able to enjoy using science to create a piece of art!

Ask your child to mould the dough into shapes of their choosing. The important thing is for the sculptures to become hard and dry, so ask your child to create thin shapes if possible.

Once they are happy with what has been created, bake the shapes in a hot oven. When the baking process is complete, ask your child to describe the new properties of the dough. Encourage them to use scientific language. How has the dough changed from how it was before? What properties does it have now? Ensure your child uses the correct scientific language to describe the models (rigid/flexible/soft/inflexible etc).

Once the shapes are dry, encourage your child to paint the shapes with the acrylic paints. Once these are dry, they can be glued together to assemble a bigger sculpture or left as individual shapes and used to create a display. They can be made into a wall hanging, an ornament or a mobile, for example.

Enjoy getting creative!
