Main Activity
Turn to page 101 inΒ Cambridge Primary Science Book 3.
Ask your child to look at the page, read the information and answer the questions at the top of page 103. Ask your child if they can think of any other ways to separate or sort the same animals, e.g. animals that eat meat, animals that eat plants and animals that eat both meat and plants.
Explain that scientists who study living things need to be able to group them. This is important. An animal class is made up of animals that are alike in important ways. Scientists have grouped animals into classes to make it easier to study them. There are many different animal classes and every animal in the world belongs to one of them.
Cut out the images in theΒ Sorting Living Things resource and ask your child to sort them in any way they choose. Then re-sort to fit a different set of criteria. Discuss the different criteria that they could choose to sort the living things.
π PRINT & CUT OUT - Sorting Living Things Pictures
Once your child has sorted the animals into those groups, ask them to choose some different criteria for grouping the living things, e.g. by using their appearance.
