Today's Lesson

Assignment

This is an assignment lesson. Please access Assignment 3 for details of what you will need to submit to your student's Wolsey Hall tutor

What to Get Ready

Ahead of the lesson, print out a copy of the cards (cut them out) from the πŸ“„ Animal Categories game resource and use the game instructions to write on the five large sheets of paper. Display them so that your student will be able to see.

Main Activity

Place the cards on the table. As you begin the lesson, ask your student to look at the cards.

For fun and for an extra challenge, tell them you will time them to see how long they take to complete a challenge: can they work out which animal goes on which sheet of paper?

Read out the features on each sheet of paper, referring to them sometimes as 'categories' so that your student understands them to be 'groups of things'. Many of the features will be obvious, but you may have to explain 'warm and cold blooded' (cold blooded animals can't warm their blood up on their own; they rely on heat from outside their bodies, for example, from the sun).

Encourage your student to have a guess if they aren't sure where to put a picture card. Give them some sticky tack so that they can attach the pictures to the sheets. Afterwards, look at the pictures and features and ask your student to refine their choices if necessary.

Apply

Next, have a look at the Home-made Pets resource. Ask your student to design a pet that they can make in the next session. They could draw a picture of it and add labels for what they will use to make each part.

Once finished, ask your student to read through and complete pages 28 and 29 of CGP Year 1 Science Study and Activity book.

Please submit all completed pages as part ofΒ Assignment 3.
