Today's Lesson

Introduction

Turn to pages 22 & 23 of CGP Year 1 Science Activity & Study Book.

Look through the first section on page 22 by reading the first two sentences out to your student. They may like to read this back to you too. Ask them to look at the photograph and to read some of the labels as you point to them. This is good for their reading (decoding) skills, as well as for understanding of how labelled diagrams work.

Ask them to tell you what the arrows are there for in the photograph. They point out what the word is. As they read the labelled body parts, ask them to point these out on their own bodies. Remind them that all our bodies are different: we have different noses, hair, teeth, knees and hands to everyone else, and this is to be celebrated.

New Learning

Next, look together at the Senses section on page 22.

Read the first line to your student, but ask them to complete the line by reading the last word for themselves.

Repeat this for the rest of the senses.

Discuss the different smells, sights and tastes that we experience each day.

Ask: ‘Which are your favourite smells and tastes? Which are your least favourite? Why?’

Point out that our tongue is made up of taste buds, which help us to taste different flavours in our food.

Finally, ask your student to complete the tasks on page 23.
