Today's Lesson
Main Activity
Access the video on identifying animals and watch together with your student.
WATCH - Animal classification for Kids (YouTube)
The video helps us to understand more about the animal groups: Mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles.
Once they have watched it through, ask your student to tell you what they can remember about any of those five groups.
Write the five animal group names down on a piece of paper, creating five columns: Mammals, birds, fish,
amphibians and reptiles.
Ask: ‘Can you help me to fill in some details about any of these groups?’
Your student may be able to remember that, for example, birds have beaks, so this is a feature that can be written into the ‘Birds’ column.
Watch the video again, this time pausing when features are given, and add these to the columns.
Using an object which will cover up a feature that has been written down (for example, a small strip of paper) play a game where your student closes their eyes whilst you hide one of the features. When they have opened their eyes, can they guess the hidden feature?
Repeat, scoring points for each successful guess!
Apply
While learning about what animals need to survive, discuss the impact that industrial and man-made structures have had on local plant and animal life. Try to think of a local area where there is very little wildlife and consider the reasons why. What impact are humans having on wildlife?
Consolidate
If you feel that your student has significant gaps in their understanding, spend some time over the next few days addressing these, by utilising the resources from the previous lessons. For example, the RSPCA video and CGP Science book.
Quiz
PRACTISE - Step 9, 10 and 11 Quiz
*All quizzes on this course are optional, they do not count towards your student’s grade. If you decide to do them, they are a chance to explore your student's understanding of different topics.
If your student finds reading tricky, you can read them the questions.
If your student is unsure of an answer, talk with them about their ideas. You can also look back at previous lessons together.*
