Today's Lesson
Introduction
Today, your student should look inside the fruits and vegetables that they sorted yesterday and should have a go at tasting them.
Ask them to decide which of the foods they would like to cut up and taste. Before it is cut open, ask your student to predict what it will look like inside. Inside most fruits we see the seeds of the fruit. What about the vegetables?
When cut open, ask:
- ‘Does it look like what you predicted?’
- ‘What patterns and shapes can you see?’
New Learning
Use a magnifying lens or hand lens to look closely at the inside of the fruits and vegetables when they are cut open. Spend some time describing these. Remind your student that we are using our sense of sight to help us do this.
Then, taste some of the fruits and vegetables that your student would like to. Encourage them to be brave and challenge themselves to taste foods that they haven’t done before. Remind them that a balanced diet is very good for us, and we will only be able to eat a balanced diet if we try different foods.
Discuss the differences in taste, asking them questions like:
- ‘Is this sweet?’
- ‘Is this sweeter than that one?’
- ‘Do you think this one will be sour?’
- ‘Which do you prefer and why?’
Ask your student what sense they are using. Tell them that taste is a sense and we use our tongues to taste things. Remind them that our tongue has taste buds which help us to taste different flavours. We can feel and see these on our tongue. (Remind them that we have to take care when tasting as some things can be bad for us. They should always check with an adult to be sure that something is safe.)
Consolidate
As an extra activity, ask your student to choose a fruit and to complete a drawing of it. Their drawing should show the fruit before it was cut open, and after it was cut open. As they draw, discuss with them the patterns and textures that they see, to help them create these in their drawings. Display their work for others to see!
