Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Ahead of the lesson, collect some small objects to put in sensory bottles. These items need to be small, interesting, maybe glittery, and waterproof. Also collect some items with a variety of textures, sounds and colours for the sensory boards.
Use the letter from the playgroup (see the π Sensory boards and bottles resource) which asks your student to make a Sound Challenge and gives instructions for doing so.
Introduction
Show your student the Science Dictionary words from the previous lessons (π Step 3 Lesson 1 and π Step 4 Lesson 1) and see if they remember the activities that went with them and what they learned during each activity.
Pretend a new playhouse for children is being built nearby and they need a room for exploring how their senses work. Tell them that it is possible to design boards and bottles that are exciting to use.Β
Explain that the boards and bottles will need to be safe at all times and so the bottles need to be sealed and the materials on the boards need to be firmly stuck and too large to swallow.
Main Activity
Show your student all of the different items you have collected. Then, ask them to classify them into items suitable for their board and those they will put in the bottles.
Give your student a bottle and a board (the session resource shows some examples of sensory bottles and boards).
The bottles need filling with water when they are completed and the cap sealed with strong tape.
Extra Challenge
If your student is ready for an extra challenge, ask them if they can create a new sensory bedtime routine that is calm and relaxing and that uses all the senses? Β
Which story book could you read? What type of music could you listen to? Which drink would be calming to taste?
