Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Turn to pages 32 & 33 of CGP Year 1 Science Activity & Study Book.

Look through the fact file for each pet on the top half of both pages with your student. Identify each of the animals, encouraging them to do as much reading as they can, even if supported by you at times.

Write down these words from the key vocabulary so your student can see them: fish, mammal, amphibian, reptile, bird.

Ask your student to tell you which of the pets on the two pages belong to which group. Can they remind you of any features that each of these animal groups has?

Discuss the words carnivore and herbivore.

Ask: ‘What do you think they mean?’ (Note that there is information about what animals eat on page 30.)

Explain that carnivores eat only meat and herbivores eat only plants. Which animals fall under which category? It might be helpful for your student to label each animal with ‘C’ for carnivore and ‘H’ for herbivore.

Then ask your student to complete the tasks across pages 32 and 33.
