Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Before the lesson, create a Pet Detective sack. You will need items that are related to the needs of a pet. If you do not have any objects, you could draw objects on small pieces of card to put in the bag.
Main Activity
Look through theβ―Pet Detective sack. Tell them that you would like them to be a detective and to try to work out which pet the objects in the bag are used to care for. The objects will provide clues.Β Β
Pull out one item at a time (keep the more obvious ones till the end) and discuss together what each item is and how it is used when looking after a pet.Β
When you have finished looking at the items, ask your student to try to guess what type of pet needs all the things in the bag and what else they might need to look after it to make sure all of its needs are met.
Apply
Remind your student of the pet designs from the previous session (Step 9 Lesson 2). Show your student the materials you have collected and display the π Home-made pet ideas resource to give them some ideas. Give them a time limit (about 30 mins) to make their pet using the available resources.
Then, ask:
- βHow will you keep your pet happy and healthy?β
Encourage your student to concentrate on its features when they are answering this question. For example, βIt has small legs so it will just need a little walk; it has fur so it will need brushing.β
When your student has made their pet, ask them to compile a short list of the main things their pet needs for health and happiness.
Finally, talk about people who look after animals professionally (e.g. veterinarians, farmers and zookeepers).
