Ourselves
Objectives
To understand that we need our senses to help us explore the world and that often our senses work together to make that possible.
Resources
Five senses (YouTube) | Three covered jars with different smells inside (for example, lavender, garlic, lemon slices, coffee powder)
Vocabulary
touch | sight | smell | taste | hear | sense
Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Prepare the three covered glass jars, each with a different, strong-smelling substance inside.
Main Activity
Review with your student what it was like to explore the outside with, and then without, sight. Talk again about what they think it might be like for people who are blind and how their other senses might become more developed.
Ask them to remember if they noticed any interesting smells whilst they were outside (the smell of flowers, leaves, soil, cars, traffic.). Explain that smell is one of our senses and that we use it a lot!
Ask: ‘Can you think of times when smell is very important?’
For example, in cooking, deciding if food is nice or if something is burnt.
Apply
Show your student the three jars, with the outsides covered. Ask your student to lift the lids a little bit and to smell what is inside, without peeking.
Ask: ‘Can you guess what the smell is? Can you describe the smell?’
You could prompt their answer using words such as, sour, bitter, like flowers.
Now ask them to take a look inside for more clues. How much easier is it to work out the smell if you can also see what it is? Senses are important and often brilliant on their own, but they work best in a team with each other.

Quiz
PRACTISE - Step 3, 4 and 5 Quiz
*All quizzes on this course are optional, they do not count towards your student’s grade. If you decide to do them, they are a chance to explore your student's understanding of different topics.
If your student finds reading tricky, you can read them the questions.
If your student is unsure of an answer, talk with them about their ideas. You can also look back at previous lessons together.*
