Today's Lesson
Main Activity
Print off the photographs of the habitats that your student took, and ask them to annotate them with all their facts and questions, listing the main features of each habitat. Show your student the ๐ Science dictionary resource and encourage them to use these words when describing their work.
New Learning
Tell your student to bend over and feel their backbone.
Say: โLots of animals have a backbone; can you think of any that do? Some don't. Some have their hard bits on the outside and some are just really squishy. We often call creatures without a backbone 'mini-beasts' but real scientists call them invertebrates.ย We call creatures with a backbone: vertebrates.โ
Practise saying these two new science words with your student.
Watch
Show your student the video on mini-beasts:
If this video does not play in your country, please try the one below.
Discuss with them, using the following questions as prompts:
- Which mini beasts can you remember the names of?

- What is special about what all caterpillars do?
- What are carnivores? Which mini-beasts are carnivores?
- What are herbivores? Which mini-beasts are herbivores?
- Which mini-beasts have shells?
- Why do some snails have stripes?
- Why do some beetles have bright red wings?
Once finished, ask your student to read through and complete pages 30 and 31 of CGP Year 1 Science Study and Activity book
