Today's Lesson

Introduction

Turn to pages 34 & 35 of CGP Year 1 Science Activity & Study Book. Ask your student to look at the photograph of the city on the two pages.

Ask:

  • What can you see?
  • What materials do you think have been used to build the city?
  • How many different materials do you think you can see?
  • Why has glass been used for the windows?
  • Why has rock been used for the buildings?
  • Why has metal been used for the statue?

Read through the information boxes with your student. Encourage them to read some of the information or words themselves.

Main Activity

Ask your student to complete the activities at the bottom of pages 34 and 35.

Apply

As an extra activity, challenge your student to find objects in the photo that have not yet been identified or discussed, for example, the bollards and chains between them. Discuss the materials that these objects have been made from, and why these materials were chosen.

Alternatively, you may wish to choose a different city, town or village scene of your own, and to discuss the materials in this scene.

Quiz

PRACTISE - Step 12, 13 and 14 Quiz

*All quizzes on this course are optional, they do not count towards your student’s grade.  If you decide to do them, they are a chance to explore your student's understanding of different topics.

If your student finds reading tricky, you can read them the questions.

If your student is unsure of an answer, talk with them about their ideas.  You can also look back at previous lessons together.*
