Today's Lesson
Introduction
Today’s lesson leads straight on from Step Two Lesson One.
When your student has completed their own measurements, show the 📄 Collecting the data resource and together follow the instructions and fill in the tables. You may prefer to print this out in a large format.
Experiment / Practical
Your student should then measure the hands and feet of the volunteers in the same way as they did their own. This is an excellent opportunity to reinforce measuring skills, so do let them be as independent as possible here. Look back at the 📄 How to measure resource for help if it is needed.
Explore early scientific ‘fair testing’ by demonstrating an incorrect way of measuring, for example, placing the ruler in the wrong place on the hand so we get incorrect data. Ask your student what was wrong with this, and how we need to correct it.
Once finished, give your student a large speech bubble from the 📄 Speech bubbles resource. Ask them to think about the activity and then ask them:
‘What surprised you the most about the results? What have you learned?’
Support your student in writing their answers in the speech bubbles.
Quiz
*All quizzes on this course are optional, they do not count towards your student’s grade. If you decide to do them, they are a chance to explore your student's understanding of different topics.
If your student finds reading tricky, you can read them the questions.
If your student is unsure of an answer, talk with them about their ideas. You can also look back at previous lessons together.*
