Timetabling and Motivation

Part 1

Schedule

Once you are enrolled in your Wolsey Hall course(s) and have discussed your learning with your SPM during the Welcome Call, you will receive an Assignment Schedule like the one shown below. This provides an overview of when assignment work will need to be completed and is created by your Student Progress Manager (SPM) to reflect family holidays or breaks you may wish to take.

Creating a Timetable

Once you have received your schedule, we recommend that you create a weekly timetable.  There are some aspects to consider before you create a timetable. You will need to refer to the Primary Hours of Study.

When planning learning time, you should consider the time of day your student is most motivated. This time is often earlier in the day but will vary for each child.

As adults, we can often overestimate the length of time a child can focus on a learning task. A five-year-old child on average can concentrate on a single task for ten minutes, however, a ten-year-old child may be able to concentrate for up to 30 minutes.  Our lessons are designed to be split into smaller chunks of learning which allows you to build regular breaks into your child's learning routine. Even a small break can help to bring their concentration level back to its peak.

Motivation

We all feel unmotivated at times but here are our top tips on how to stay focused on your learning:

  1. Give your student plenty of breaks - you don't even need to leave the room if you don’t want to. Stand up, have a good stretch or check what the cat is up to (if you have one!).

  2. If you can, take your books and study in a different venue for a day – maybe the library, a coffee shop or a relative’s house. You could even just move your desk to a different location – you don’t necessarily need to leave the house.

  3. If it helps, listen to music – maybe when you are completing a more creative task?

  4. Snack rewards – once you complete a difficult exercise, treat yourself to a tasty (preferably healthy!) snack.

  5. Go outdoors and get some fresh air. This has been proven to help improve focus and overall brain function, illustrated by the image below.

  6. Remember that your tutors and SPM are only a Canvas Mail message away and are always willing to offer support. Try not to wait until you are behind or worried about a particular lesson or assignment.

  7. Find out more ideas to help keep your child motivated using the section on 'motivation' in Wolsey Hall's 'Supporting Your Child' document.
