Welcome to the Wolsey Hall Lower & Upper Primary Speaking and Listening in the English Language course.
This course is a place for you and Wolsey Hall to track your child's Speaking & Listening lessons to provide visibility on when your Speaking & Listening lessons take place.
We recommend that you take the time to go through this introduction before starting your lessons.
STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE
The Speaking & Listening course consists of 18 x 30-minute face-to-face speaking lessons between the student and Tutor.
The first lesson will be a 'Getting to Know You' lesson to help the tutor assess the student's English language level.
A parent or trusted adult will need to participate in the first lesson to meet the Tutor and discuss future lessons.
After lesson 1, the adult does not need to participate in the lesson, although we welcome this, but does need to be present in the same room as the student to meet our safeguarding rules. Following the first lesson, each lesson is tailored to meet the needs of the student, and the speaking and listening content is mapped to the student's current level of English language.
Please remember, these lessons are to practise speaking in the English language; they are not lessons on reading, writing, or spelling.
As a family, you are welcome to suggest topics that you would like to cover in the lessons if you have requirements at home. For example, you might like to ask for some vocabulary tied to specific hobbies or activities.
USING THE MENU LIST ON THIS COURSE
On the left-hand side menu, you will see three items: Home, Assignments and Grades.
Home: This page you are reading is the Homepage. It provides you with the information you need for this course of lessons.
Assignments: This will take you to the lesson overview page for this course. Each lesson page represents your face-to-face lesson and has reminders of what to prepare.
Grades: This will take you to the lesson overview page with your Tutor feedback attached. You can view the comments by clicking on the Comments Icon or clicking on the lesson to see the feedback on the submission page.
BOOKING YOUR SPEAKING & LISTENING LESSONS
Now that you are enrolled in this course, your Tutor will be in touch with you via Canvas Email to welcome you to the course and arrange a time with you for your first lesson i.e. lesson 1 - Getting to Know You.
Complete and return the 📝 'Getting to Know You' document at least 3 days before your first lesson.
In Lesson 1 you can discuss how frequently you would like to book your future lessons. We recommend 1 to 2 lessons per week, depending on the needs of the student. We do not recommend a gap of more than 2 weeks between lessons, unless due to a holiday/study break.
In total, this course has 18 x 30-minute lessons to be booked. The Expiry Date for this course of lessons is tied to the Expiry Date of your current English or English as a Second Language course. All lessons must be booked within this period.
TOP TIP: We advise you to use a regular day and time for your lessons. This helps to provide a routine for the student and helps you to remember the schedule for your lessons.
HOMEWORK
At the end of a lesson, your Tutor may give you some homework - this will be based on practising some key vocabulary or sentences in the English language. Any homework will be shared in the Tutor Feedback comment section of each lesson.
ON COMPLETION OF YOUR COURSE OF 18 SPEAKING & LISTENING LESSONS
On completion of these lessons, the following options are available:
- Take no further Speaking & Listening lessons.
- Continue with Speaking & Listening lessons by re-enrolling on the Speaking & Listening course and having a further 18 lessons. (There would be no need for Lesson 1 to be a 'Getting to Know You' lesson as this is a continuation of prior lessons). The expiry date of this course will match the current English or English as a Second Language course you are taking. To re-enrol on this course contact your SPM.
- For those who want more Speaking & Listening lessons but feel that 18 more lessons are too many (perhaps you have completed part 1 & 2 of your English/E2L course at this point, for example), we have a HALF-COURSE version of this Speaking & Listening in the English Language course. It works in the same way as the full course but comprises 9 lessons instead of 18, and there is no need for Lesson 1 to be a ‘Getting to Know You’ lesson as this is a continuation of prior lessons. The expiry date of this course will match the current English or English as a Second Language course you are taking. To re-enrol on the half-course contact your SPM.
We hope you enjoy your Speaking & Listening lessons with your Tutor.
If you have any questions please contact your Student Progress Manager who will be pleased to help.
Best Wishes
